UBER EXITS NIGERIA AFTER 12 YEARS AMID ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

September 03, 2026

Ride-hailing company Uber has ended its operations in Nigeria after 12 years, highlighting the growing economic challenges facing the country’s ride-hailing industry.

The company, which commenced operations in Lagos in 2014, reportedly ceased its Nigerian operations on September 2, 2026.

Uber’s exit comes amid rising fuel costs, inflation, currency pressures and increasing competition from other ride-hailing platforms.

Industry stakeholders have raised concerns over the sustainability of app-based transportation businesses in Nigeria, particularly amid rising operating costs and challenging economic conditions.

The departure means Uber users will now have to rely on rival ride-hailing platforms for similar services, while the company’s exit raises fresh questions about the long-term viability of the sector.

Uber’s departure also marks the end of its 12-year presence in one of Africa’s largest consumer markets.
