TINUBU APPROVES 35 NEW LINEAR ACCELERATORS TO BOOST CANCER TREATMENT IN NIGERIA
August 13, 2026
President Bola Tinubu has approved the procurement of 35 additional linear accelerators between 2027 and 2029 to expand access to radiotherapy and strengthen cancer treatment services across Nigeria.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, disclosed this while receiving members of the Global Advisory Council of the National Cancer Control Plan Technical Working Group.
According to Salako, the investment is part of the Federal Government’s National Cancer Control Plan 2026–2030, which is aimed at improving cancer prevention, early detection and treatment across the country.
The minister said six cancer centres are currently being developed nationwide as part of efforts to improve access to specialised cancer care.
He added that the government was also expanding cervical cancer screening and strengthening routine human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination as part of its broader cancer prevention strategy.
Salako said the planned investments would help improve cancer care infrastructure and reduce the challenges Nigerians face in accessing radiotherapy and other essential treatment services.
