SUPREME COURT RESTORES FINAL FORFEITURE OF EMEFIELE’S SEVEN PROPERTIES
July 18, 2026
The Supreme Court has restored the final forfeiture of seven high-value properties linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, overturning a Court of Appeal judgment that ordered a retrial of the case. A five-member panel of the apex court unanimously allowed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC) appeal and reinstated the Federal High Court's forfeiture order.
The apex court affirmed the November 1, 2024 judgment of the Federal High Court, Lagos, which held that the properties were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities and ordered their forfeiture to the Federal Government. The appeal was argued for the EFCC by a legal team led by former Attorney General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN), alongside the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).
