MEDIA, INEC STRENGTHEN COLLABORATION AHEAD OF EKITI GOVERNORSHIP POLL

The Centre for Media and Society, in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission,held a one-day dialogue focused on voter education and media engagement ahead of the Ekiti State off-cycle governorship election.
The event, which took place on April 13, 2026, in Ado-Ekiti, was supported by the European Union under its Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria programme.
Speaking at the opening session, stakeholders emphasized the importance of voter education and responsible media reporting in ensuring credible elections. Discussions highlighted the need for collaboration between the media and electoral bodies to tackle misinformation and disinformation during the electoral process.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, Dr Bunmi Omoseyindemi, addressed participants on the commission’s preparedness, while officials from INEC headquarters provided insights into voter education strategies and publicity plans.
Participants, including media practitioners, also engaged in interactive sessions addressing key issues such as election coverage, combating fake news, and promoting inclusive voter education, especially among youths, women, and persons with disabilities.
The dialogue further explored ways to strengthen coordination between the media and INEC, with recommendations including the establishment of dedicated communication channels, rapid response mechanisms, and regular information briefings.
The programme concluded with a call for sustained collaboration and commitment from both the media and electoral authorities to ensure transparent, peaceful, and credible elections in Ekiti State.
