September 03, 2026
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering a comprehensive audit of its electoral technology systems and a mock presidential election ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this in Abuja while delivering the keynote address at the 13th Annual International Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN).
The conference was themed “Media, Technology and Elections in Africa: Navigating Digital Disruption and the New Dynamics of Electoral Communication.”
Amupitan said the proposed technology audit and mock election would help assess the readiness, reliability and effectiveness of the commission’s electoral systems ahead of the 2027 polls.
The conference also featured calls from ACSPN, the National Orientation Agency and other stakeholders for stronger collaboration among relevant institutions to tackle misinformation and disinformation ahead of future elections.
Stakeholders stressed the importance of responsible media practices, public education and effective use of technology in strengthening electoral communication and protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
