FAYEMI DEFENDS PARTY PRIMARIES, DENIES IMPOSING CANDIDATES

May 22, 2026

Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has defended party primaries and denied allegations of imposing candidates within the ruling party.

Speaking during an interview with foremost journalist, Edmond Obilo, Fayemi said he has always supported democratic contests, recalling that he once competed against 13 aspirants in his first term and 33 aspirants in his second term. He insisted that he was never handed political positions through consensus.

He warned that imposing candidates could cause dissatisfaction and possible division within the party, stressing that genuine consensus should only happen voluntarily.

Fayemi also acknowledged concerns that the party was drifting away from its founding ideals, while criticism was raised over politicians seeking endorsements from Aso Rock instead of participating in open contests.
