The Nigeria Customs Service has called on the National Assembly to review Nigeria’s import waiver and concession regime, urging lawmakers to assess whether the incentives still justify their fiscal cost and support the country’s economic objectives.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, also appealed for a review of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, saying three years of implementation have revealed areas that require refinement to meet the demands of the evolving trade environment.

Adeniyi further urged lawmakers to focus legislative oversight on digital customs systems, automated risk management, cargo clearance timelines and the effectiveness of tax exemptions, rather than individual cargo clearance decisions.
