BABACHIR LAWAL BACKS OBI-KWANKWASO TICKET FOR 2027

July 27, 2026

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has said a joint presidential ticket between Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and Rabiu Kwankwaso would stand a better chance of winning the 2027 presidential election than if both politicians contested separately. Speaking in an interview, Lawal rated an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance highly, while predicting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would not win if he contested.

The ruling All Progressives Congress dismissed Lawal's remarks, with its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, saying the former SGF's comments did not deserve a response. Morka stated that there was nothing in the remarks that warranted the party's attention.

Meanwhile, supporters within the Kwankwasiyya movement described a possible Obi-Kwankwaso alliance as the APC's greatest political challenge ahead of the 2027 general election. The comments have further fuelled speculation over possible opposition alliances as political consultations continue ahead of the next presidential race.
